Write Words

Because we are moving to the U.S. in a matter of weeks, questions have been generated.  By far, the most frequently asked question:  What will you miss the most?

Think about your own life.  There is a rhythm.  There are things in your normal that has become innate, natural, part of who you are and what you do.  There are the big things in your life that demand attention like birthday parties or special events.  Yet, for the most part, life is usually most often marked by the normal.  The day-in-day-out routine that seems effortless until interrupted.  The dash living ... the living that takes place between the year of your birth and the year of your death.  If I live to be 90 years old, I will have celebrated only 90 Christmases.  Yet, in those 90 years, how many trips to the grocery store, routine errands or work days will have passed that were just part of my normal life?  Many.  Many days of ordinary that when taken into full account make up the sum of my living.

With Mother's Day being yesterday, I did a little reflecting on my days spent with my own mother, on my days of early motherhood, and the slipping of time through hands that are unaware of the speed at which time travels.  The little things are the most remembered:  the way my girls would say my name before they reached puberty, the way my Mom's lips would press together when cutting material for a dress she was making ... for me, the way Sunday afternoons drift by, the way mornings rush in a hectic flurry, the way nighttime feels when good nights are said.  These are the things that capture my attention when time is given to entertain the simple treasures of life.

Recently, a friend lost her 14-year-old son in a tragic boating accident.  Another friend has not seen her 3 children in over 9 months due to heartbreaking circumstances.  What each of them wouldn't give for another moment.  I am reminded to cherish days.

Life will never be perfect.  There will be people you wished lived closer.  There are pounds that you wish didn't sit in obvious places.  There are bills left unpaid.  There are struggles left to battle.  Yet ... it's the magic of the ordinary days when captured through the right perspective that makes each day precious.  All it takes is the foresight to recognize the moments as a gift given by a good Father who uses it all for our good and presents each challenge with a promise of His divine and miraculous presence.

What will I miss the most?  The ordinary days lived in my corner of the world.  I'll miss them.  Yet, I'll be grateful for having lived them.  I will be grateful they were lived well.  I will cherish them and not pine away for them.  There are new ordinary days to be lived in the next chapter.

Turning pages into more ordinary,
Christina

Dear God,

As I looked through the pictures of our one day trip to London yesterday, I am so thankful for the way you work.

First of all, thank you for letting us work for a company that takes such good care of us. For our VISA, we were required to make the trip. Not only have you allowed us to serve with such a gracious company with a heart for all nations, you have allowed them to provide the finances for such a trip. Thank you.

Second, thank you for the family you have given me. I love my girls. To think, as a young woman, looking into my future, I never wanted to marry nor did I see myself as a Mom. I wanted to do something extraordinary for you in a village in Africa if that's what you wanted for me. Instead, you've allowed me to marry my best friend; given me three extraordinary little women in which to invest my life, and you've knitted us together as friends. I don't take that for granted. Every minute you give me with them, I am eternally grateful!

While we were in London yesterday, my sites were set on spending the day in Harrods Department Store. Once we got there, I was overwhelmed by the … luxury, size, prices, people, and indulgence. Not really just one thing but all of it together. It made me feel like I was among thousands who were worshipping a golden calf. While others were buying designer dresses for toddlers at the price of 800 pounds a dress, and looking at handbags at 650 pounds a bag, and having their poodles pampered at the Pet Spa (for who knows how many pounds) … I just wanted a Crispy Crème dounut for 1.20 and felt a little extreme by buying a dozen to satisfy our 2 year craving for the sweet and yummy sugar rush. It dawned on me that we really are aliens living in a strange land. One day, as you tell me in your word, there will be a place of extreme opulence. It will be a place I will feel at home in because you will be there. Thank you.

Thank you for directing us to the charming Italian restaurant for lunch. The food was yummy, the prices wonderful, and we got water with ice cubes! What a treat!

Finally, thank you for allowing Hyde Park to be just a short trip across the street from our Italian dining experience. The rest of our day was spend sitting on a park bench, strolling through a rose garden and soaking up some London sun. Thank you knowing that the great outdoors makes me feel like a person.

I know I already said “finally” but I need to add another “finally”… and this time I really mean it. Thank you for today, being Mother’s Day, to be postponed to next week by my family. As we all slept in, and are tired and listless, we needed the day to recuperate. Thank you that they want to make my day special … and are willing to give me next Sunday to properly celebrate Mother’s Day. They are just terrific!

I’m so glad I am your daughter. You do all things well.

See ya …

Mother's Day 09

Can't tell you how wonderful my first Mother's Day in Vienna was!! It was truly one of the nicest days since we've been here!

We ate at an authentic little Austrian eatery, complete with a guy singing hokey Dean Martin songs, smoking, and drinking while entertaining! Priceless! The restuarant had a mascot, a big, old lab that walked around. At one point he came to the table next to us, sat there all forlourn looking and received a treat from a customer she had in her purse! It was such an experience!!

We then set off for a drive ... to an unknown adventure. We stumbled across an old castle ... complete with a guided tour. It was enchanting!! Of course the tour was in German, but it was great none the less!

The day ended by discovering we were only about 10 minutes away from home, we found a new and more scenic drive to the highway from our flat, and the day ended by Chris tucking in the girls while I totally vegged out on the couch!

A wonderful ending to a perfect day!!

I'm sitting on my bed, in my pj's, with the windows open, listening to birds chirp and streetcars zoom by, drinking coffee, needing to take a shower, but really enjoying my day! What could be better than this?

My first Mother's Day in Vienna! Our plans consist of more of what I'm doing, a 1:00 p.m. reservation at a cute little Austrian Restaurant, and then a drive in the country which will inevitably result in finding an ice cream shop! A perfect day!!

Wanted to say Happy Mother's Day to my mothers: JoAnn and Shirley!! What a blessing to have you guys in my life!

Also wanted to share a recent photo of the reason I'm a Mother: the girls! This photo was taken in the subway and is our version of The Chronicles of Narnia ... may you all be whisked into another land today!!

Love and hugs to all!!

About Me

My photo
I love to write. I love to tell stories. I've been writing since I was a kid; it's just something I do. With a cup of coffee in one hand, I attempt to show our ordinary life in an up close, personal, and authentic way. I make no apologies for my belief in a Life Author, God, who desires to show us who He is. Thus, I see our journeys as purposeful adventures. I am a wife. My Chris and I have been married since 1991. Everyday I wake up and find him in my bed, looking at me with no makeup on and dark circles under my eyes, I thank GOD he is a man of faithful endurance! I am Mom to 3 girls: Addison, Parker and Libby. They challenge me to be all I was created to be. I hope you come away with something useful, inspiring, humorous, or helpful. That's my goal ... and why I scribble words on a page. Enjoy!
