Sparrows Fall
Today Chris and I had to go to MA35. For those of you who don’t know, MA35 is the Immigration
office for those of living in Vienna who need to apply for residence
permits. Just saying the name “MA35”
brings fear and trembling to most expats!
Its reputation precedes itself!
Anyway, Chris and I dropped off what we hope to be our final
papers. As we were walking, we saw a
bird fall from an overhang. I am not
normally moved by animals, their mishaps, or their drama. Before you to think me a cold-hearted person …
let me just explain that I am simply not a fan of furry creatures. However, this little guy got my attention.
As we stepped closer to investigate, this was a baby bird that
had obviously fallen from a nest. It was
apparent that he was going to die. I
know this sounds … weird … but we began to pray for this little bird. I was instantly reminded about something I’ve
read in the bible about God and his thoughts toward … birds:
Are not
two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not
one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father’s care. So, don’t be afraid; you are worth more than
many sparrows. (Matthew 10:28, 30)
I could go on and on and on and on and on … you get the
picture. God spoke so many truths into
my life as He showed me how this little “sparrow” parallels my own life. This little guy took a tumble, yet God,
Creator of all things, Mighty to save, was not outside His care. Wow.
Let that sink in a little.
My problems, worries, cares, concerns are noticed by the
same God who would take time to notice this same little helpless bird. He cares about the bird, yet cares much more
about me! Nothing goes unnoticed by my
God.
This week, a sweet friend shared something with me that is simply
fantastic along this same line of thinking. She told me a story from the Old
Testament about Abram. He’s fought a
battle. He’s tired. God sends Melchizedek to bless and refresh
Abram. Again, this God who knows when a
sparrow drops to the ground knows when I fall, when I hurt, when I need refreshment. He gives us what we need, when we need it, to
move us forward.
God sent us, as corny and nature-loving as it sounds, to
help this sparrow today. However, God
used that little sparrow to speak to my heart such great truth … I am
refreshed! That’s His words in
action. The care of a sparrow can send
me, his child, into a place of pure peace, refreshment and the ability to move
forward!
As I live in a place that very few know the loving-kindness
of a Father who cares for sparrows much less know how deeply and passionately
He loves them … I am moved to pray. I am
moved to trust that this love will be evident … experienced … embraced.
From the daughter of a sparrow lover,
Christina
