The Croods

Because of the price, going to the movies in Vienna is a treat.  This week was the girls Easter Break so Libby, Parker and I “treated” ourselves and went to see the new animated movie, The Croods.  With our 3D glasses in place, the smell of our fellow moviegoers’ popcorn hovering in the air, we had no idea the adventure we were about to take.

In short, The Croods are the last surviving family of cave people.  They don’t live, they survive.  They have to live in fear, in a cave, and as the potential dinner menu for a larger predator.  Dad is protector and tied to traditions that work.  Mom is his co-partner.  The oldest sister is rebellious of the rules, traditions, and overall lifestyle.  Middle brother is compliant.  Little sister is … wild.  And Grandma is … old, cranky, carries a big stick and is not beloved by her son-in-law the Dad.

The plot develops when rebellious Epp, the oldest, wakes during the middle of the night and does the forbidden.  She ventures out of the cave only to discover a boy … named Guy.  Guy has new ideas, fire, and is searching for tomorrow by following the sun.

The really short version of this tale:  Guy is an instrument in bringing about change for the Croods.  Change has been bad.  Change has brought fear.  But, as the Dad morphs into a new man by embracing change, the family discovers a life outside the bubble of fear and ultimately saves their lives.

The Croods, this silly animated film, encouraged me. I could relate to the Dad … the keeper of tradition.  I saw myself in Epp … the searcher for meaning of life.  Guy related to my sense of longing for and believing in a better tomorrow.  I even saw a little of myself in the Grandma … but I’ll keep that to myself!

The Croods.  A movie review, perhaps.  A great “treat” for me …
